From September 2010 issue

Madison County Covered Bridge Festival

Always held the second weekend in October, this year’s Madison County Covered Bridge Festival in Winterset, Iowa, will be October  8th, 9th and 10th (2010) and offers, as usual, many activities.

“MEET ME  AT THE BRIDGE” and STREET DANCE

Last year a new event was added: the Street Dance. This year enjoy the free Street Dance on Friday night on the NW corner on Jefferson, and on Saturday night it’s once again “Meet Me At The Bridge” (although this year it will be in the City Park at Cutler Donahue Bridge. There will be wine tasting and music - - and it’s free).

VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES and EVENTS

The Madison County Covered Bridge Festival has been taking place since 1970 and always offers a wide variety of food, craft and antique vendors, music, enter-tainment, demonstrations, a quilt show, car show, parade and tours of the covered bridges.

All weekend there’s a variety of events taking place: last year many enjoyed a horse shoeing demo, engine display, sheep dog herding, games, story telling, free movies, skateboard demonstrations and much more! This year expect some repeats AND other things taking place.

One of the most popular attractions happens to be the tours of the covered bridges, and there’s the popular Antique and Classic Auto Show on Sunday. Hundreds of beautiful restored cars and trucks are always on display, with award being given in many different classes.

Visitors can take tours of not only the bridges, but also of the magnificent Courthouse on the square. There’s also free shuttle rides from the square to the Historical Complex and the Birthplace of John Wayne.

COVERED BRIDGES

All six covered bridges remaining today in Madison County are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Cedar Covered Bridge (where Francesca and Robert got to meet in the novel by Robert James Waller) was restored in 1998. It  was destroyed by fire in 2002, however, and a replica was built and dedicated in 2004.

Roseman Covered Bridge (in the novel and movie) is known as the haunted bridge and still sits on its original location.

Holliwell Covered Bridge, longest of the bridges, was also shown in the movie Bridges of Madison County.

Cutler Donahue Bridge, now in Winter-set Park, was moved there in 1970 and renovated.

Hog-back Covered Bridge remains in its original location and was renovated in 1992.

Imes Covered Bridge, oldest of the remaining bridges, was built in 1870.

JOHN WAYNE

Born in Winterset May 26, 1927, John Wayne became a Hollywood legend. His birthplace, named the 2004 Iowa Tourism Attraction of the Year, offers guided tours daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day and Easter.

While in Winterset be sure to see the NEW 9 foot statue in the Park on John Wayne Drive.
